About three years ago, the League of Legends scene raved about Crown: Central player in Worlds 2017 winner Samsung Galaxy, world-class Mid Laner and Faker's personal nightmare. After a weak following year and the subsequent move to North America, the South Korean recently lost his place in the roster of Counter Logic Gaming. What happened?
Lee Min-ho worked his way up the LCK step by step. He was seen as an inconsistent super talent with fluctuating performance and motivation problems. With Samsung Galaxy, they finally rose to the top of the world: if they failed in the final of the World Championships at SK Telecom T1 in 2016, they took revenge just a year later. Crown had reached the top, but the deep fall was not long in coming.
After the dissolution of his successful team and the takeover by Gen.G, the qualification for the Worlds was successful in 2018, but in the largest tournament on the planet, Crown and his teammates were already over after the group stage.
At that time, North American teams were trying to gain strength. This is how OpTic Gaming managed the supposed coup to guide the former world champion into the LCS. Crown's commitment sparked euphoria and confidence from his new employer and the North American fans - but the advance praise should have been given prematurely.
While the playoffs were missed in the Summer Split 2019, OpTic Gaming managed to reach the knockout round in the following half-season. Crown's performance fluctuated between excellent and worryingly weak, but the constant rays of hope ensured that numerous teams wanted to sign the South Korean with the colorful past.
Counter Logic Gaming finally won the contract. But the calculation of those responsible didn’t work out this spring: defeat followed defeat and Crown in particular provided services that were partly underground. CLG stated that the squad suffered from enormous communication problems on stage and who read between the lines could easily see which newcomer this circumstance was attributed to.
So they finally pulled the rip cord: Crown, 2017 world champion and who came to the USA with the reputation of being one of the most talented mid laners on the planet, was kicked out. Most fans can hardly imagine that the once glorious career is now over. After all, there were always phases in which Crown only pressed the bank, played horribly badly for weeks and had to take a lot of criticism. And yet the talent with the distinctive earring kept coming back.
